Taking Care of You

Why self care is not self-indulgent

Whether you are a singleton or part of a family, you matter. Taking care of your health and wellness should be part of your daily routine including diet, exercise and mindfulness which aids good mental health and reduces stress.  Doctors in the west are now realising that holistic health can only be achieved by nurturing mind, body and spirit, a way of life that is intrinsic in eastern philosophy.

The Pros and Cons of the Paleo Diet

In recent years, the Paleolithic diet, commonly known as the Paleo diet, has gained significant popularity among health enthusiasts and those seeking alternative approaches to nutrition.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo diet, also called the "caveman diet" or "stone-age diet," is based on the types of foods that our ancestors might have eaten during the Paleolithic era, which ended around 10,000 years ago.

The diet typically includes: Lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds

However, the Paleo excludes: Grains, legumes, dairy products, processed foods, refined sugars.

Pros of the Paleo Diet

Whole Food Focus:

The Paleo diet emphasises consuming whole, unprocessed foods, which can lead to increased intake of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This focus aligns with many nutritional recommendations for optimal health [1].

Potential Weight Loss:

Many people report weight loss when following the Paleo diet. This may be due to the elimination of processed foods and the emphasis on protein and fiber-rich foods, which can increase satiety and reduce overall calorie intake [2].

Reduced Inflammation:

The elimination of processed foods and the inclusion of anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, and omega-3-rich fish may help reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health issues, including heart disease and autoimmune disorders [4].

Cons of the Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet, with its focus on whole foods and elimination of processed items, offers potential benefits such as weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and increased nutrient density. However, it also comes with challenges, including potential nutrient deficiencies, sustainability concerns, and social difficulties.

Eliminating entire food groups, such as dairy and grains, may lead to deficiencies in certain nutrients like calcium and B vitamins. This is especially concerning for growing children, pregnant women, and older adults.

In addition, the emphasis on high-quality, organic meats and fresh produce can make the Paleo diet more expensive and less accessible for some individuals. This may create barriers for those with limited food budgets or access to specialty food stores.

As with any dietary change, it's essential to consider your individual health needs, lifestyle, and goals. Consulting with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can help you determine if the Paleo diet is appropriate for you and how to implement it in a balanced, sustainable way.

Whether you choose to follow the Paleo diet strictly or incorporate some of its principles into a more flexible eating plan, the key is to make informed choices that support your overall health and well-being.
